A racing shell hull is as wide as the crew members.

Racing 8— A Racing 8 or eight-person shell is a competitive rowing boat with eight rowers and one coxswain (steersman and timekeeper). The boats can be up to 65 feet long and can generate enough power and speed to pull a water-skier. It takes skill for the rowers to “set” or balance the unstable boat while applying maximum pressure to the strokes during a race. Rowing is primarily a collegiate sport and is an event in the Summer Olympic Games.
